Welcome

THEATRE WORKS has always been an alternative voice in Australian theatre.

In the 1980’s, an ensemble of highly driven artists from the Victorian College of the Arts – including Susie Fraser, Caz Howard, Hannie Rayson and Peter Sommerfeld – came together to present new Australian work with a strong focus on community. After six years of presenting location theatre on trams, boats, community halls and traditional theatres, the ensemble found a home in St Kilda’s heritage listed Parish Hall. Over the years, under multiple cycles, Theatre Works consistently renewed itself, responding to the times with gritty courage.

In 2017, as part of Theatre Works’ continual evolution, we make the shift towards a co-producing house model. Six Artists In Residence will be offered extended creative development, production support and a new level of mentoring from industry professionals. The works they create will be supported for presentation beyond their premiere season. Emerging artists will be engaged as Associates, working alongside our resident artists. Our venue will transform into a true hub for performing arts that will feed the entire industry.

Theatre Works’ 2017 Season brings together a group of game changers who share our view – that theatre is essential within a society that is more disparate and diverse than ever. The wordsmith. The provocateur. The visionary. The fearless. The experience. The ensemble. Artists in search of a contemporary theatre language that push the boundaries of formal theatre making – from new Australian writing, visual theatre, live art and digital expression. The season demonstrates Theatre Works quest – to actively encourage artists to be creative with no bounds.

In 2017 we reframe our relationship with audiences. We give you access to these incredible minds. We take you beyond the conventional theatre experience through the Conversation Series, Directors Circle and Masterclasses, that foster connection and collaboration. Together, we question – what is theatre now, and revision it for the future.

On behalf of the Theatre Works team and our Resident Artists, we invite you to be a part of this new stage and to immerse yourself in Theatre Works’ 2017 Season.
