Worstward Ho is a vision of the world at the point of extinction. One lone man faces the challenges of how to proceed in the face of what can seem impossible odds. How to make sense of a world in a state of disappearance? What are the barest essentials necessary for life to continue? In his desperate attempts to strip existence down to its ‘meremost’ elements: a few ‘shapes’ imagined in a void, lit by a dim light, he seizes our attention and suggests a way forward. His attempts often fail, but his courage lies in his determination to continue.
‘No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.’
The Australian premiere of Samuel Beckett’s final major piece of writing, Worstward Ho. Widely recognised as ‘one of the supreme poetic texts of the 20th century,’ it is, however, little known, rarely read and even more rarely presented.
