VENUE

Immerse yourself in the spectral world of Henrik Ibsen’s GHOSTS, skilfully adapted by Jodi Gallagher and brought to life through the visionary direction of Steven Mitchell Wright.
The collaboration between the award-winning team of Gallagher and Wright promises a fusion of compelling storytelling and artistic innovation. Moving the story from its original Norwegian setting to the heat and dust of the Victorian bush in the late nineteenth century, this re-imagining of the Ibsen classic promises to viscerally confront a contemporary Australian audience with the repressed truths of intergenerational illness and trauma.
We follow Mrs Alving as she tries to shield her son, Oswald, from the truth of their family’s past. But as ghostly secrets unravel, she is forced to confront the reality of their lives, buried under her compulsion to maintain outward propriety and duty. GHOSTS is a journey through the shadows of hidden sins and the quest for truth. Ibsen’s classic shocked Europe when it was first performed and published, and was almost immediately banned because of its treatment of taboo subject matter. Ibsen himself said that after Hedda (Hedda Gabler) and Nora (A Doll’s House), Mrs Alving was inevitable. Brought to life by an exemplary cast and creative team, this new version of GHOSTS will resonate and shock a contemporary audience, just as the original did 120 years ago.
In the hands of Gallagher and Wright GHOSTS is a theatrical event not to be missed.
Sometimes I think that’s all we are, all of us. Not just the ghosts in our blood, from mothers, from fathers, but dead ideas and beliefs and stories that have never really died, but live, in us. We can never be rid of them. Whenever I read a newspaper, I see the ghosts creeping between the lines, the old hatreds, the old gods. Ghosts, the returned, all over the world. Countless as the grains of the sands. We are so miserably afraid of the light, all of us.
