Isaac Babel born in 1894 Odesa ,executed in 1940 Moscow
From the “ Dusty Talmuds” of his childhood, seduced by Flaubert and Maupassaunt , fatally attracted by the barbaric nobility and at the same moment repulsed by the cruelty of the Soviet Cossack mercenary- through the upheavals of the Bolshevik revolution,he becomes a great writer and a threat to Stalin’s utopian nightmare.
Unsettled by current events, he returns by train ,under cover of music and moonlight, along with one of his famous creations- Benya Krik, the pre-eminent jewish gangster of Odesa’s Moldavanka, known simply as The King , who sufferred a fate not unlike his creator. They want to do what they can to help…

Inotrope Productions has been quietly at work for some 20 years bringing original pieces for the theatre provoked by inspirational works of the written word often combined with personal stories
Including-Russian Soup,Last Words, multiple collaborations with the St Kilda Drop in Centre- such as ,The Lower Depths and Tempest at the Drop In -all directed by John Bolton , designed by Brian Lipson and Uncle Vanya -directed by co-founder Greg Ulfan . For All is good.. Simon Starr joins in on this new theatrical adventure. A self confessed musical monk ,he has toured, recorded and performed with many of Australia’s most respected artists for over 30 years, crossing over to all styles owing to his deep love of all music and grooves.
