Red Stitch in association with Theatre Works presents the Australian premiere of Enda Walsh’s PENELOPE, a surreal, pitch-dark comedy inspired by Homer’s Odyssey.

On a sun-scorched island off the coast of Greece, the beautiful Queen Penelope awaits the return of her husband from the war. Beneath her window, four men – the last in a long line of suitors – hatch a plan to win her love and escape a grisly fate.

An outrageous tragicomedy about masculinity, human endeavour and the futility of conquest, PENELOPE premiered at the Galway Arts Festival in 2010, and won a Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

"A truly original theatrical voice."
THE GUARDIAN

"Extravagantly imaginative."
THE NEW YORK TIMES

"Mr. Walsh’s rich and strange contribution to the field is in its own subversive class."
THE NEW YORK TIMES

"The delicate interplay of knockabout comedy, verbal humour and philosophical themes is superb... a box full of brilliant shards."
