" Theatre is all about people, passion, and a “healthy” dose of shared delusion”
Today we chat with Jasper Jordan Magri (he/him) about preparing for and performing in the upcoming production of The VOLITION Project, directed by Belle Hansen and created by Jasper and the fellow Early Career Artists Cohort of 2024. Playing at Theatre Works Explosives Factory from 29th August to 7th September.
Can you describe a typical day of rehearsals for THE VOLITION PROJECT? What is the energy like behind the scenes?
A: The energy during rehearsals is contagious! Being part of an ensemble of 10, we’re constantly feeding off each other's enthusiasm and creativity. Even on days when someone isn’t feeling 100%, the collective energy lifts everyone, and suddenly, you forget about the lack of sleep you had last night.
The devising process was incredibly fun and dynamic. It was amazing to watch as we accumulated so many scenes, each one brimming with potential. What stood out, though, was the moment we stepped back to refine and be specific with each scene. Having a clear intent for the story we wanted to tell, crafted with so much love and joy, was truly a remarkable experience. In those moments the magic of the project came to life!
What has been the most challenging aspect of devising and bringing his production to life?
A: One of the most challenging aspects has been learning to step back and view the bigger picture of what we’re creating. This has been a crucial skill for me to develop, but it’s something I struggled with. As a member of the ECAP team, I became so attached to the project that I often found myself lost in the details, forgetting to consider how the audience would perceive the final product.
That’s where Belle’s guidance was truly invaluable. She helped us expand our artistic vision while also ensuring that we didn’t lose sight of the audience's perspective.
Do you have a favourite line or scene from the play? What makes it stand out to you?
A: “Delusion, convince yourself”
I think this line is hilarious in the context of where it happens within the play, but more personally, I think it encapsulates our mindset while creating the show. While devising such a dramatic and heightened production, it's natural for doubt to creep in. There are moments when you're deep in the creative process and question, 'Wait a second, is this okay? Is it silly, or is it iconic?'
For me, this line perfectly captures the essence of our journey with this show. It’s a reminder that in creating something audacious and bold, those moments of uncertainty are not just inevitable but necessary. You cannot convince an audience if you cannot convince yourself!!
How has working with director, Belle Hansen been?
A: Belle is INCREDIBLE! She has supported me immensely throughout the past six months, and I feel so lucky to have worked with her. Belle has a clear vision and a remarkable eye for the little things that make a huge difference. Her attention to detail elevates the work, whether it's a subtle shift in movement or the tone of a line delivery.
Belle has pushed me to be bolder, stronger, and more specific in my performance. Working with her has made me a more confident and deliberate artist.
Her wealth of knowledge in both the creative and logistical aspects of theatre has been invaluable to me. She’s taught me so much about what it takes to bring a production to life from every angle, and I’ve grown as an artist and a professional because of her guidance. I couldn't have asked for a better collaborator and mentor.
In what ways has this role challenged you compared to other roles you've undertaken?
A: Being a swing for all the characters has been an entirely new and demanding experience for me. I've never taken on a role like this before, and initially, it was quite overwhelming. The sheer amount of blocking, lines, and character nuances to remember is a challenge in itself. However, this challenge has also pushed me to develop a more versatile approach to performance, forcing me to think on my feet and adapt quickly.
What has made the process manageable, and even rewarding, is the incredible support I've received from the cast. They’ve been patient, encouraging, and always willing to lend a hand, which has made all the difference.
Looking back at your journey through this production, what moment or aspect will you carry forward into your future projects?
A: Theatre is all about people, passion, and a “healthy” dose of shared delusion. For someone who sometimes feels lonely, this experience has been a powerful reminder of the deep connections that theatre fosters. What stands out most is how our ensemble, made up of diverse individuals with unique backstories and talents, comes together to form something greater than the sum of its parts. We become one team, stronger and more unified, and that sense of unity is something I’ll always cherish and strive to recreate.
